Her connection to the divine is so obvious, and her heart center pours into her teachings, her circles and everything that she does and is. These days an ever increasing number of women are seeking out midwifery care for birth… but our care for women must go beyond the birth portal. Midwives were always the ones that women looked to, throughout the ages, for their birth control needs. Contraception was taboo and oftentimes illegal until the recent generations, and because of this midwives quietly, often in secret, showed the way.

There is an extensive history of midwives aiding women in contraception throughout the ages. The crazy part of this is that midwives were giving a soap cream as contraception dating as far back as 500AD. There were tens of thousands of midwives killed by the Inquisition for giving this very method of birth control, the same basic formula that Wise Women’s Choice upholds today. There are records of midwives giving this natural form of contraception from around the world. From Brazil, to Ethiopia, to Israel, Spain, France, UK, South Africa, New Zealand, Algeria, Morocco, and beyond. There are Vatican records investigating midwives for this very thing even centuries after the Inquisition endeavored to put a stop to it for good. Both Jewish and Arab history shows records of this classic use of feminine soap cream for contraception for married women, especially given postpartum to help “space the generations.” In the 1500’s it was standard in Egypt for women to receive this prized cream as part of their dowry. Queen’s and King’s mistresses knew the secret, and in the 1700s in France it even became illegal to add lemon or vinegar to soaps, as this was key in the making of this contraband birth control.

The use of this precious resource has been repressed throughout time. Passed in secret, called by code words, from around 1880-the 1930’s midwives internationally were spreading this resource to the tune of today’s equivalent of 30 million dollars a year…all in code, all on the black market, produced under Dr. Salibury’s patent out of London, England for the same basic form of birth control that Wise’s refined formula is today.

Midwives also held the understanding of fertility, and the knowledge of herbs for bringing on a bleed and ending unwanted pregnancy. But their knowledge of soap cream, the same method as Wise Women’s Choice, has been passed down for centuries. Recipes recorded in midwifery books, Queen’s memoirs, Vatican records of investigation and persecution, Jewish and Arab lore, Brazilian slave midwives records, the story goes on and on.

This wisdom was taken from us with the role out of big Pharma’s toxic, petroleum based methods that we know as birth control today. Midwives in the 30’s began to be imprisoned once again for this method and the secret went back into the shadows, until now. Licensure funneled midwifery education into accepted standards and the shift to OBGYN care assured that women would receive recommendations for strictly pharmaceutical methods. The same methods that have altered women and destroyed their health for generations.

Today stands the chance for reclamation. As women awaken everywhere, abandoning pharmaceutical birth control by the masses, refusing medicalized birth, reclaiming their womb spaces… Midwives stand to, once again, be the holders of the wisdom that was lost.

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.
